A diamond in the rough

WITH so many new digital compact cameras available in the market today, it’s easy to overlook this 2-year-old model from Panasonic. And camera buyers may be missing a lot.

The Panasonic Lumix DMX-LX3 may look unassuming. It is a bit boxy and full of tiny buttons. But for those who are able to get past these issues, they are rewarded with SLR-level pictures.

High-end projectors buoy market

High-end projectors buoy market
By Alma Buelva

One of the high-end projectors to come out from the Japanese company recently is the Epson EB-450Wi. It is an ultra short throw projector that turns any standard whiteboard or smooth, flat surface into an interactive presentation area.

The EB-450Wi comes with its own wall mount mechanism so it can be installed overhead and from there it beams images onto a flat, clear surface. Presenters will appreciate that having a projector overhead eliminates the nuisance of getting them blinded by the projector’s light.

The EB-450Wi comes with a digital infrared pen so users can electronically write over their presentations and even manipulate on-screen objects as if they are using a chalk, whiteboard marker or a computer mouse.

Gone are the days when laptops looked like ugly thick slabs that focused only on performance and shunned aesthetic appeal.

Today, laptops served up to the mass consumer market do not only boast of performance and features, they also look cool. Users get to feel like they own valuable pieces of property.

One such laptop is Toshiba’s Satellite M645, a 14-inch display multimedia laptop powered by the new Intel Core i5 processor. The Satellite is part of the “premier series” of Toshiba’s brand of notebooks.

Smartphone + environment = Sony Ericsson Aspen

Smartphone + environment = Sony Ericsson Aspen

Say hello to a better future: The Sony Ericsson Aspen is one of the GreenHeart cellphones. It was made with care for the environment in mind. | Zoom
If I could fit everything I need into a small box that would fit my pocket, I would.   I guess that’s why I really like gadgets, cell phones in particular, that can do everything I want in one nifty device. And, when it comes to cell phones, what it can do in one go, rather than how big it is or how cool it is or how nice it looks, matters most to me.

I have been quite smitten by smartphones with the full QWERTY keypads. Of course, a full QWERTY keypad on a touch screen smartphone makes the cell phone more endearing.

Getting the attention and budget of small-to-medium-businesses (SMBs) and small and home offices (SOHOs) is now the focus of many PC makers.

According to Michael Ngan, country manager of Lenovo Philippines, SMBs and SOHOs make up the big untapped segment of the IT market.

These businesses have particular IT needs, such as ease of deployment and use of PC hardware since many small companies maintain a small staff to manage their computer systems.

SMBs and SOHOs are also particular about the price and energy efficiency or electricity costs of PCs since small companies earn just enough, Ngan said.
